Bagus Pandega at
Swiss Institute, New York

Introduction

As part of a partnership between Kunsthalle Basel and Swiss Institute (Sl), Pandega will present two distinct, first-of-their-kind exhibitions in August and September 2025, respectively. Each of these shows represents an amazing opportunity for Indonesian art to be seen on the international stage.

About the work

At Swiss Institute, Pandega will present a new version of the installation Hyperpnea Green. The multimedia installation features mined minerals, lights, and an oxygen machine that transforms air into purified oxygen. The machine also includes living plants in a loop of biofeedback, reacting to the presence of visitors in the space. A new sculpture in the shape of an aquarium will house a culturally significant object that will undergo a nickel-plating process. Cameras with multi-axis movement will be installed in the tank and live-stream the video to monitors elsewhere in the gallery.

About the artist

Bagus Pandega (b. 1985, Jakarta) is a Bandung-based installation artist. A graduate of the Bandung Institute of Technology, he creates works that merge electronic systems with sound, light, movement, and plants. His exhibitions include ROH (Jakarta, 2024), Yamamoto Gendai (Tokyo, 2018), and major events such as the Bangkok Art Biennale (2024), documenta fifteen (2022), Art Basel Hong Kong (2023), and the Asia Pacific Triennial (2021–22).

Riar Rizaldi
at Thailand Biennale 2025

Introduction

MV Foundation is supporting Riar Rizaldi for his new commission at the Thailand Biennale 2025: Eternal [Kalpa]. His work, titled Badak, will debut at the Biennale. The support will help cover important travel and production costs.

About the work

Badak is a film installation made up of a 20-minute projection shown in a circular frame and a sculpture of a Javan rhinoceros skeleton cast in tin.

The film follows an Indonesian tin miner who enters a shaft in rural Java and suddenly emerges on a beach in Phuket as a tourist. Along the way, the story connects mining and tourism as forms of extraction. Non-human figures—the Javan rhinoceros and Phuket’s deities—appear as forces shaping this transformation.

About the artist

Born in Bandung in 1990, Riar Rizaldi is an artist and filmmaker based in Yogyakarta. His works explore technology, cosmology, labor, nature, and cinema. He has shown work at major festivals such as Berlinale, Locarno, IFFR, and BFI London, and at institutions including Centre Pompidou, MoMA, Whitney Biennial, Taipei Biennial, Istanbul Biennial, and the National Gallery of Indonesia. He has also held solo exhibitions at Gasworks (London), ICA (London), Z33 (Hasselt), Centre de la photographie (Geneva), and Batalha Centro de Cinema (Porto).

About the Thailand Biennale
